Tanner Ovinge and Lane Giesbrecht are two of Lakeland's top loopers.
...
Ovinge, a native of Scandia, Alta., came to Lakeland College this year to study ranch and stock horse riding. He had team roped for the previous five years and thought he'd give it a try in college. He is currently the number one point leader for team roping in the Canadian region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA)."It's all right, but you've got to stay there. There's more rodeos so it could change," said Ovinge.Leitheiser doesn't think so."Tanner, I think, should finish number one in points. He's just that consistent. He's the most solid header on the team in years. He might miss a few and get down on himself and then he comes back and goes for days and doesn't miss one. He's just calm, cool and collected like the iceman."Ovinge's key to success is getting out on the steer as fast as possible."You give the steer a certain amount of head start. As soon as you're in position, when your horse's right shoulder is in the steers left hip, you come across with the rope."While Ovinge and Geisbrecht have never team roped together in a competition, they do share a mutual respect for one another, and plan to rope together in the future.
