When restaurateur Pat Ottone opened Elli's Great American Restaurant on Monday, not even he could have predicted what a stir it would cause.
Though located in a building that used to be a Lyon's Restaurant at 1250 S. Main St., Salinas, Elli's couldn't be more different than its predecessor, which closed suddenly in February 2001 after months of shrinking profits.
Gone are the dark red vinyl booths, fake wood paneling and stained, green carpet. In their place are cheery yellow walls, a raised roof and exposed roof beams painted white. The menu is a variety of upscaleAmerican-style fare.
