Thomas Ottmann studied Mathematics, Physics and Mathematical Logic at the University of Münster, obtained the Ph.D. in Mathematical Logic in 1971, and obtained the Venia Legendi for Computer Science in 1975 at the University of Karlsruhe.
From 1976 to 1980 he was Associate Professor and from 1980 to 1987 Professor for Computer Science at the University of Karlsruhe.In 1987 he became the first holder of a chair for Computer Science at the University of Freiburg and director of the newly established Institut for Informatik in the faculty of Mathematics.In the summer term of 1989 he was visiting professor at the Department for Computer Science, University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, and in the summer term of 1994 visiting professor at the ETH Zürich, Swizerland.
He was Secretary of the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science from 1979 to 1988, elected reviewer for Theotretical Computer Science of the German science foundation (DFG) from 1984 to 1992, and coordinator of a national joint research initiative on Data Structures and efficient Algorithms from 1988 to 1992.
