Today, students can work with patients in three or four area hospitals over their time in the program, said Joanne Ottman, director of the division of allied health, nursing and physical education at Naugatuck Valley.

There are also new elements of the curriculum added frequently.Today, students spend time learning about bioterrorism and how to evaluate a patient who may have been affected by something such as anthrax.

"We never even thought about that five years ago," Ottman said.

With a national nursing shortage on hand, both St. Mary's and Waterbury hospitals have asked the college to expand, she said, but added the program is at its maximum capacity now.
    ...
