Miss Dorothy Otieno, a prolific and widely travelled journalist with The Standard's education magazine, "School&Career", is soft spoken.

Recently, she was decorated by the Forum for African Women Educationalists (Fawe) for her work in the education of girls. She won the Fawe Media Excellence Award 2004 and was crowned the overall print journalist.

Her incisive and heart rendering stories, "Girl Consigned to Early Motherhood" and "Scarred by Child Labour" won the hearts of the judges. The former was on teenage pregnancy and its consequent high drop out rate.

"Scarred by Child Labour" exposed mistreatment of girls who work as house helps and their inability to access education.

Speaking during the function, Miss Otieno said: "I am grateful to The Standard for giving me a platform and the media for highlighting the disadvantaged position of the girl in education."

Miss Otieno is the "School&Career's" specialist in careers. And this is not the first time her work has been recognised here and abroad. She was placed second for the 2003 Kenya Journalist of the Year Award, was runners up in CNN African Journalist and the Lorenzo Natalie Prize.

She is a communications and business administration graduate from Daystar University and has a postgraduate diploma in mass communications from the University of Nairobi's School of Journalism.
