Alphonse Otieno, a Kenyan PhD at Northwestern University who has recently returned from a research visit to Kenya, will speak on :"A Place of Doom or Hope: Understanding Kenya,s current Politics in its historical andinternational Contexts."This is the first of four special forums on Africa, in response to what we have been reading and hearing about Liberia, Sudan, Kenya; refugees, genocide, electoral disruption, and other disturbing African issues.See additional information below on Mr. Otieno.

Alphonse Omondi Otieno holds a B.A. degree in Political Science and History from the University of Nairobi and M.A. degrees in History from both the University of Nairobi and Miami University of Ohio.He is currently a Doctoral Candidate in History at Northwestern University where he is also a teaching assistant.He has conducted research previously on "Church and the Democratization Process in Kenya," "African Political Organizations in the Colonial Period, Kenya," and "The Catholic Church and Politics, Central Nyanza, 1920-1963."Mr. Otieno is also very interested in environmental issues in Kenya.Last summer, he returned to Kenya with funding from Northwestern University to conduct pre-dissertation research on "Forestry and Colonial Experiences in Nyanza, Kenya, 1920-1963."
