    For over ten years, Michelle has worked with various non-profit organizations in developing and facilitating community arts programs for young people and adults. Her work as a highly skilled muralist is prominent throughout the City of Philadelphia and is seen in settings from Fiji to Costa Rica to Mexico. Michelle is also a founder and active member of Las Gallas, a Philadelphia-based multi-disciplinary arts collective. She holds a B.F.A. from Moore College of Art and Design and a M.S. in Arts and Cultural Management from Rosemont College. www.michelleangela.com

    NOTE: Michelle will be participating in a U.S. Embassy-sponsored residency in Chihuahua, Mexico from September 28 to October 12. As a result she will not be present during POST. She will be present for her Artist Talk scheduled for Friday November 13.

    Mixed-media artist Michelle Angela Ortiz will speak about her studio work and cultural background, "Perspectives of La India Blanca: The Journey of a Tri-cultural Latina in the Art World," Sept. 14 and 15 at noon at the Majestic Theater in Gettysburg.One of a number of nationally-recognized artists featured in the exhibition, Ortiz draws upon her Latin American and Caribbean heritage in her work to explore how family and community affect her perceptions of the past and shape her present individuality.

    A skilled muralist, Ortiz has designed and created over thirty-five large-scale public works nationally and internationally, including a 60-foot mural in Philadelphia completed for the Girl Scouts of America.She is a recipient of a Leeway Foundation Art and Change Grant and has exhibited her work at a number of galleries in Philadelphia and New York.A board member of the Mural Arts Program, Ortiz also serves as the Vice-President of Organizational Outreach for the National Women's Caucus for Art.

    Michelle Angela Ortiz was born and raised in South Philadelphia.Her household flourished with her Latin American and Caribbean cultures.Her work focuses on the importance of time and existence.Culture, spirituality, community and the sense of self are also strong elements in her work.

    For the past five years, Ortiz has worked with various nonprofit organizations such as Taller Puertorriqueqo, Network Arts, Mural Arts Program, Congreso de Latinos Unidos, Art for Change, The Village of Arts and Humanities, AMLA, The Multicultural Youth Exchange Gallery, The Please Touch Museum and RaLces Culturales Latinoamericanas.

    She has created over fifteen large-scale murals and mosaics in various regions of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and internationally abroad in Ecuador.

    Ortiz has also exhibited her paintings and prints in numerous galleries in Philadelphia such as: The Painted Bride, Fox Gallery & The Kelly Writer's House (University of Pennsylvania),Goldey Paley Gallery (Moore College), Lorenzo Homar Gallery (Taller Puertorriqueqo), Art Forms Gallery (Manayunk)

    Also, Ortiz has various works in permanent and private collections in Philadelphia and abroad.Such as Stedman Gallery (Rutgers University), Galeria Tonatzin (San Juan Bautista, CA) and Xicanoindio Gallery (Mesa, AZ)

    Ortiz is the co-director of the MYX gallery, a board member of the Mural Arts Program and she currently serves as the Vice -President of Organizational Outreach for the National Women's Caucus for Art.

    Besides teaching in the community and producing her studio work, Ortiz is also involved in two multi-disiplinary artist collectives called "LAS GALLAS" and "WOMEN HOLLER".
