Directing Attorney, Immigration Unit

Ortiz has been an integral part of the LAFLA team since 1982, handling complex immigration cases. He began his career at LAFLA in what was the East Los Angeles Branch Office at a time and when LAFLA was no longer providing immigration assistance. Ortiz was instrumental in re-starting this important legal area and began representing clients facing many immigration issues.

In 1984, LAFLA formally recognized the need to provide immigration services to its clients, which led to the formation of its Immigrants' Rights Office (IRO). Ortiz worked at the IRO where he represented immigrants in many types of immigration cases including asylum matters and major litigation affecting the rights of immigrants.

Ortiz obtained his Bachelor's Degree from Yale University and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Southern California.

It was a close game, but Michael Ortiz, Director of our Immigration Unit, front and far right, delivered the winning run for a final score of 6-4 in favor of the East/West team. Employees at the Long Beach Self Help Center are already demanding a re-match

Michael J. Ortiz is the Directing Attorney of LAFLA's Immigration Unit.He has been with LAFLA since 1982.

Michael started working in the East LA branch office at a time when LAFLA was no longer providing immigration assistance.Michael changed that and began representing clients served by the East LA office in immigration matters.

By 1984, LAFLA had recognized the need to provide immigration services to its clients.This led to the formation of LAFLA's Immigrants' Rights Office (IRO).Michael worked at the IRO where he represented immigrants in many types of immigration cases including asylum matters and major litigation affecting the rights of immigrants.

Michael grew up in Watts.He obtained his BA from Yale University and his JD from the University of Southern California.
