Orr elected to Detroit Human Resources Association Board
    ...
Claudia D. Orr, an attorney in the Detroit office of Plunkett Cooney, one of the Midwest's oldest and largest law firms, was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the Human Resources Association of Greater Detroit (HRAGD).

"I am committed to the goals of HRAGD and welcome the opportunity to assist human resources professionals in southeastern Michigan," said Orr, who serves as Vice President of Legal Affairs. "I will work alongside board members to help advance the association's mission, as well as to continue educating members on the volatile changes employment laws bring to the workplace."

Prior to her board election, Orr, who has represented employers for nearly 20 years, served as chair of the association's legal affairs committee for several years. Now as Vice President of Legal Affairs and the board liaison to the committee, she and her colleagues on the committee are responsible for educating members about changes in the law that could impact human resources management.

Established in 1916 (originally as the Detroit Employment Managers Club), HRAGD is the largest association of human resource professionals in Michigan. With over 800 members from a variety of organizations who work in all areas of human resources, the association is affiliated with the Society for Human Resource Management and its Michigan Council.

Orr focuses her practice primarily in the area of labor and employment law. Her clients include Fortune 500 companies, local governments, tier-one automotive suppliers, nationwide distributors of pharmaceutical products, nonprofit agencies, healthcare providers, restaurants, and wholesale food distributors. She has extensive litigation and appellate experience and regularly practices before state and federal courts.

As a counselor, Orr advises clients on employment/labor matters, including hiring, discipline/discharge, complex ADA/Family and Medical Leave Act/STD-LTD/Worker's Disability Compensation Act issues, and labor grievances/arbitration matters.

In addition, Orr defends employers in litigation and arbitration hearings involving allegations of discrimination, harassment, retaliation, FMLA violations, wage/benefit issues, whistleblower retaliation, public policy discharge, unpaid commissions, and pension, severance and other ERISA claims, etc.

Having earned Martindale-Hubbell's highest rating-AV, Orr has served as chair of the Employment and Labor Committee of the Oakland County Bar Association (2003-2004), a member of the Employment and Labor Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan, and a mediator and employment arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association.

Established in 1913, Plunkett Cooney employs more than 150 attorneys in nine Michigan cities; Columbus, Ohio and Indianapolis, Indiana. The firm has achieved the highest rating (AV) awarded by Martindale-Hubbell, a leading, international directory of law firms and has received several awards naming the firm as a top place to work in the legal industry.

The judgment is a "shocking development" that has made some employers second-guess their bona fide interactions with their workers compensation carriers, says Claudia Orr, a senior attorney at Plunkett Cooney in Detroit.
