As teachers gear up to start a new school year, Cindy Orr has her mind on more than what she will be teaching Aug. 25 when her sixth-graders return to Elm City Middle School.

As president of the Wilson chapter of the North Carolina Reading Association, Orr is busy thinking of ways she can get more people in the community to join the organization.

The number of reaading contest entries that can be turned in by Wilson County students is based on the number of members in the local chapter, so Orr is hoping to boost membership enough that Wilson can contend with larger systems, such as Wake County.

The Reading Association's goal is to promote literacy in the community by holding specific events, such as Reading Day at the Mall, giving books out to organizations and urging students to enter different writing contests.

Every school in the county, whether public, private or home-based, may take advantage of what the Reading Association has to offer. But in order to make that happen, members are needed.

"The Wilson chapter of the North Carolina Reading Association does a lot for the county and the community," Orr said.

Anyone can join the nonprofit organization, which meets once a month at the Wilson County Public Library.Teachers who join will also receive one Continuing Education Unit of credit. At the meetings, teachers are given ideas and information to help them in the classroom.Members can also log on to www.ncreading.org for updated news.

The local chapter has about 80 members, but Orr is hoping to double that number by the end of October. She is calling it a "membership drive" and is excited about the plans in the works this year.
