The Edinburgh Orthopaedic Trauma Unit in which he works is one of the busiest in the United Kingdom. He is responsible for the supervision and training of specialist orthopaedic trainees and visiting overseas trainees. Chris Oliver has a major research interest in the development of the Internet in relation to Surgery. He has edited major national and international orthopaedic websites and previously help established the global Orthopod e-mail list. Chris Oliver is no longer actively involved as an Associate Editor because of other commitments, however, his previous contributions remain an important component of the OWL Directory.
