Corey Oakley Named New Manager By Fair Board
SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Local boy Corey Oakley is returning home after a 16-year absence to serve as manager of the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. Born and raised in Sebastopol, Oakley's first taste of fair life began with his experience as a 4-H youngster showing animals at the Sonoma County Fair. Oakley has since gained invaluable educational and career experience working in various positions within the fair industry. Oakley will replace veteran Fair Manager Jim Moore, who is retiring at the end of February after dedicating 18 years to the Fair.
...
I'm honored to have the opportunity to succeed him," says Oakley.
Oakley is very pleased to have been invited by the Sonoma County Fair Board to bring his knowledge, skills, and abilities to the table to compliment the efforts of the board and staff in maintaining the County Fair and the Harvest Fair as the primary showplace for the community to gather to celebrate the bounty of Sonoma County's agriculture and cultural heritage.
Oakley was chosen after a complete candidate review and selection process that included two oral boards and an interview with the entire Fair Board. John Serres, president of the 2005 Sonoma County Fair Board, commented, "Corey is well known in the fair industry and knows every aspect of this industry, which makes him very well suited for the position.
...
Corey's come back home."
Oakley attended Gravenstein Elementary School in Sebastopol, graduated from Analy High School in 1983 and Santa Rosa JC in 1985, before leaving home to earn a degree in Agricultural Communications from UC Davis in 1988. He worked at the Sonoma County Fair during college and upon graduating, before taking a position in 1990 as the director of programs for the National Orange Show. While with the National Orange Show, he was promoted to general manager in 1993, and to president/CEO in 1997, before leaving in 2000 to own an event production and tent structure rental company in Las Vegas, Nevada. After a successful stint as company vice-president, Oakley was recruited in 2001 to serve as the vice-president and general manager of Helm and Sons Amusements, the fastest growing outdoor Amusement Company in the western United States.
With a keen interest in community service, Oakley participates in many professional and community organizations, and has held board positions with IATSE Local Health and Welfare Trust, the California Authority of Racing Fairs, and the Inland Empire Tourism Council.
Oakley will move to Sonoma County from Highland, California with his wife Barbara.
