"If you think of a group that's against drinking alcohol -- you're wrong," said Yellowstone County MADD Chapter Director Karen Oakland.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) isn't opposed to the use of alcohol, but the abuse of alcohol."We aren't prohibitionists ... we just want people to drink responsibly and not drive if they have been drinking.
Oakland founded MADD in Montana in 1996 after her daughter was killed by a drunk driver in Wyoming."I was so mad after that, I got involved with MADD," she said. There are currently only two MADD chapters in Montana, the one in Yellowstone County and one in Bozeman.Oakland estimated the Billing-based chapter has between 100-150 members.
When Oakland lost her daughter, she was shocked to find out there wasn't an advocate for the victims of drunk drivers.

Oakland was in Laurel last Saturday for the first MADD Car Show held at Fichtner Chevrolet on Southeast Fourth Street.Oakland and other MADD members hope to make the car show an annual fund-raising event.
"As we get more requests to advocate for victims of drunk driving, it impacts my time and takes me away from fund-raising to pay our expenses. We need more volunteers and more help with fund-raising," she said.
"Our mission statement is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and help prevent under-aged drinking," said Oakland.
Oakland testified successfully before state legislative committees to lower the drunk driving blood alcohol content (BAC) designation from .10 to .08.She has also testified in support of stronger seatbelt laws and in favor of an open-container violation law.
Locally, the MADD chapter has helped sponsor the After Party, for area high school students following prom celebrations.Other activities include operation of public awareness booths, filling public speaking invitations and fund-raising.
Oakland called the first car show a success. In all, 40 cars were displayed.
