   Dr. Ellen L. O'Sullivan, a nationally recognized expert on play and leisure, is Professor of Public Health at Southern Connecticut State University, where her energies focus upon health promotion and wellness.She also is a CPRP (certified park and recreation professional) with the goal of unleashing the "promise of play" for everyone.
   
   Dr. O'Sullivan piloted with the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) a program called "Hearts N' Parks" to help community park and recreation providers deliver heart healthy programs at the grassroots level.The success of that endeavor led to an expansion of that program, which now has 50 magnet sites in 11 states across the country.Dr. O'Sullivan developed the resource guide for this endeavor and serves as its lead trainer.
   
   Dr. O'Sullivan has been active in a number of leadership roles with NRPA and their state and regional affiliates.She is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Park and Recreation Administration and received their Willard C. Sutherland Practitioner Award in 1999.In 1998, she was awarded the National Distinguished Professional Award by NRPA and in 2000 was designated as one of the Distinguished Alumna from the State University of New York at Cortland, where she received a bachelor of science degree in Recreation Education.She also holds a master of education degree in Community Recreation Administration from Springfield College and a doctor of philosophy degree in Educational Administration from the University of Connecticut.

Sutherland Practitioner Award from the Academy of Park and Recreation Administration.She received her Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut and has served as member of the NRPA Board of Trustees, and a judge for the National Gold Medal Award program.
