Standards of breast cancer management should be a great deal better in terms of organisation and care, according to Prof Niall O'Higgins, retired consultant surgeon at St Vincent's Hospital, Dublin, and Chair of the national quality assurance group for symptomatic breast disease services. The group's recommendations have just been launched .

Speaking to IMN, Prof O'Higgins said this is the first time quality measures have been explicitly stated. He added that it is now "of critical importance that a small number of specialist breast centres be officially designated and that the staffing and infrastructural needs for the functioning of such centres be provided in a purposeful fashion".

He said he hoped the newly launched standards would be adopted in the private sector just as in the public. He added that while there will always be human error the "possibility of tragic errors will be lessened" by the implementation of the standards.
