North Coast Area Health Service's Director of Nursing, Anne O'Donoghue, described the day as ‘A great opportunity for acknowledging the contribution, commitment and expertise of nurses to the quality of care delivered to the region's population.

"Our nurses are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to provide care for the sick, injured and elderly, and appropriately they mark International Nurses Day on the anniversary of the birthday of history's most celebrated nurse - Florence Nightingale, Ms O'Donoghue, said.

"Modern nursing has changed enormously, largely as a result of emerging technologies, but in many ways the personal and professional challenges are still great, and the career is an incredibly rewarding one.

"Nurses are continually adjusting their knowledge and gaining new skills to meet scientific advances. They have to be on their toes and vigilant about world trends, new practices and the latest research," Ms O'Donoghue added.
