Of the 30 tested areas, DeSoto students had "strong improvement" in 22, said Kathy Noel, director of curriculum and accountability for the DeSoto Parish School Board. "In the areas where we didn't see as much improvement, those are the areas we've been targeting for improvement and we saw some change but not as much as in the other areas. So generally, we're pleased."

The greatest strides were noted in the fifth and seventh grades, but she found strong points among the third and ninth grades, too.

"We've had a large what we call proficiency in basic and above," Noel said. "We still have a general concern in the fourth grade. I have someone looking at that today."

Overall, Noel is encouraged that the curriculum analysis team of teachers who make sure what goes on in the classrooms every day is aligning with the state's comprehensive curriculum is on the right track.

Discussions will continue in the coming months, however, on alternate schedules, said Kathy Noel, director of accountability.

"Support for four-day week was considered in terms of instructional view.Before we can go into that a lot of preparation has to occur with parents, the community and Central Office, and we will not have enough time to have all of that in place for the upcoming school year.We also have other options that we need to look at," Noel said.
