Utah reform groups have joined a nationwide campaign to build support for proposals to require television and radio stations, as a condition of receiving their licenses to use the public's airwaves, to provide free air time before all elections for candidate ads, debates and issue discussion to open politics to more candidates, ideas, and competition.

    ...
It is in the public interest to reduce the cost of political communication and open up the democratic process to more competition," said Jeanna Nixon, director of the project for the Utah Progressive Network.

Americans overwhelmingly support proposals to require that broadcasters provide free television time for candidates to discuss issues just before elections, according to a nationwide survey conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press in Washington, DC.

The Pew survey, taken among 736 adults from May 8 through May 16, found that 73 percent of the public supports free air time, with 20 percent opposed and seven percent having no opinion. The poll also found that just 31 percent of Americans realize that the public owns the airwaves, and that 70 percent mistakenly assume that broadcasters pay license fees to use assigned frequencies on the airwaves, while just 11 percent know they get them for free.
