Because of this , Nixon saw him as the ideal person to become president of the Montgomery Improvement Association , the group that was organizing the boycott. The boycott lasted over a year , and during that time King's insistence on non-violence and his earnest appeal to Christian ideals gained nationwide notice. Also , his refusal to be fazed by violent attacks , including the bombing of his home , earned him considerable respect by whites as well as blacks. In 1957 he formed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference ( SCLC ) , a union of black churches and individuals dedicated to challenging segregation laws. During the following decade the SCLC worked throughout the South , organizing non-violent protests and demonstrations , and promoting voter registration by blacks. In 1965 the march from Selma to Montgomery , Alabama secured the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. During the ensuing years the SCLC also opposed the many groups ( such as the Black Panthers , the Black Power movement , and the Black Muslims ) who advocated violent protest or revolution.
