About Cathy Nist: Born and raised in rural Northern California, Cathy Nist graduated from Wasatch Academy, a preparatory school located in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, where she first studied art. She then attended Northern Arizona University and studied forestry and geology and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in geology. Cathy was employed by the U.S. Geological Survey at Flagstaff, Arizona, and for two summers by the National Park Service at Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. She also attended graduate school at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona.

Cathy then journeyed to the Bering Sea, where she worked as a fisheries observer aboard commercial fishing boats. Seven year later, she moved to Astoria and, on a whim, took a printmaking class from Royal Nebeker. Cathy says, "I was almost instantly hooked! . . . Within a year, I knew that I had found what I truly wanted to be when I grew up, an artist!" Art classes helped ease her transition from working at sea to a land-based position with the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife. Cathy is working on a liberal arts transfer degree at CCC and plans to transfer eventually to a four-year school for her BFA.

While a student at Clatsop Community College, Cathy has studied printmaking, ceramics, drawing, art history, weaving, and mixed media installations. She enjoys working in all media, depending upon what she feels the need to express at the time. Inspiration for her art comes from nature or from her own inner turmoil. Cathy also feels her sketchbook is essential to her creative progress, and she carries one where she goes to get down notes and sketches for ideas before they're forgotten.

In 2000, Cathy won "Best of Show" at the CCC Student Art Show for "River Rug I," a handwoven rag rug showing a map view of the mouth of the Columbia River. At the CCC Student Art Show in 2001, she was awarded First Place for Three-Dimensional work for a group of three wood-fired ceramic rattles titled "Sea Seeds." Cathy had a solo show at The Hair Gallery in Astoria in September 2001 and has recently been invited to show her work at AVA Gallery in Astoria. Since January of 2000, she has been on the kiln crew at the Astoria Dragon Kiln, where all her ceramic works are now fired.
