North Windham resident and Windham Democratic Town Chairwoman Dawn Niles said she was tired of seeing the systematic abandonment of Windham by the state.

"I am upset over the closure of the Department of Social Services and the Department of Motor Vehicles in Willimantic," Niles said.

Sister M. Peter Bernard, public relations director for the Holy Family Home and Shelter in Willimantic, called on the governor to ask corporations that received tax breaks to contribute back to Connecticut in the form of taxes.

Dawn Niles, Democratic Town Committee chairman, said Thursday that even though the committee's meeting to discuss who will run for office this year is scheduled for July 8, only two people have come forward to express interest in running.

"We've only had two phone calls, we could use some more," Niles said.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at town hall.In addition to calling her to express their interest in running potential candidates can go to the meeting and put their hats in the running then, she said.

The town committee plans to endorse a full slate of candidates during a caucus scheduled for July 22.

Of the two who have come forward so far, one is currently holding office, the other has never run for public office.Niles would not identify either of them.

Niles said it's important for the town committee that Democrats occupy positions on all town boards and commissions, with the boards of finance, education, selectmen and the first selectman position being of particular importance.

Potential candidates interested in running for office should be prepared on July 8, Niles said, to talk about "why they should be the person we should consider," and be prepared to answer questions from the committee.

Dawn Niles, committee chairman, said a draft living-wage ordinance submitted in July to selectmen by Democratic selectman Lourdes Montalvo and the Working Families Party, would be too expensive for the town.
    ...
It's not feasible to require entry-level positions to be paid that kind of money," Niles said.

The draft living-wage ordinance currently before selectmen would require town employees and the employees of town contractors be paid at least $11 an hour with full benefits or $14 an hour without benefits.

The Democrats' resolution on the ordinance, however, makes no suggestions or requirements regarding hourly wages.

Niles said selectmen Tom White, Niles' brother, and Tom DeVivo were working to draft the ordinance.
