Why: In 1998, a kiln mishap at the factory resulted in "several hundred smoked and ruined pieces", according to company president Susan Nikas.Factory employees and sales reps were allowed to purchase these seconds, and many have appeared on the secondary market.

How: Re-fire a piece in an oxygen-reduced kiln.Light colors show the smoking effect most prominently. The end result will probably have a more uniform grey cast, without the "pooling" effect in the crevices of the mold, than the authentic smoky.

Susan Renaker Nikas is president and owner of Hagen-Renaker, Inc. in San Dimas, one of the state's oldest ceramics manufacturers.

Workers compensation issues have hit her company hard, but Nikas says she isn't treated any differently because of her gender.

"Most of the guys who call on me are young salesmen," she said.
    ...
Nikas thinks part of the problem may be that so many women these days are running away from being called feminists.

"They have backed off from the name, but they still want the benefits of the feminist movement," she said.

SAN DIMAS -- When a pregnant employee inquired about California's new Paid Family Leave law, Susan Nikas wasted no time getting on board.

"I think it's terrific that they've put this in,' Nikas said."I know it's important for women to be home with new babies. As a mom and a grandma, I think it's important stuff.'

As president of Hagen-Renaker Inc., a San Dimas- based figurine manufacturer, Nikas is responsible for about 60 employees. One worker who gave birth in May already participates in the program, and Nikas would not be opposed to having others involved, as well.
