Anthony NikasPRICE - Carbon County - Anthony William Tony Nikas , whose insurance career and service to the Greek community spanned more than 50 years , died at Castleview Hospital here Wednesday , May 2 , 2001 of an intestinal problem.He was 80.Tony was born Dec. 1 , 1920 in Canea , Crete , Greece to Mary Tsouvalakis and William Stavros Nikas.

At age 1-1/2 Tony immigrated to the United States literally tethered to his mother's waist.Because his mother spoke only Greek , each of them wore a sign identifying their destination to ensure reunion with his father in Price.Tony was raised in Price where he was a member of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church.A 1939 graduate of Carbon High School , he played football and boxed , proceeding to the finals in amateur AAU competition.For three years Tony studied for the priesthood at the Hellenic Theological School , Pomfret , Conn. He was recognized as an honor student by the Greek Orthodox Church Archbishop who selected him to carry the Cross of the Crucifixion at the celebration of the Epiphany in Tarpon Springs , Fla.

Tony married Joan McFadden of Provo Nov. 28 , 1975 and in 1979 they retired , living at various times in Price ; Coronado , Calif ; Rio Rico , Ariz. ; and Springville.

At theological school , Tony learned to read and sing Bysantine music and assist in Greek Orthodox Church services.He fulfilled the request of countless Greek faith parishioners in Utah , California and Arizona , chanting at funerals , weddings , baptisms and regular church services.Tony used his expertise in the Greek language to interpret for the courts in Carbon County , and he served as co-chairman in 1966 of the 50-year Golden Anniversary Celebration of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church.He was a member of the Carbon Country Club , a life member of the Price Elks Lodge 1550 and past president of the Carbon Chamber of Commerce.Survivors include his wife , Joan , Price ; children , Roy A. ( Yvonne ) Nikas , Price ; Joanna Jan ( Joe F. ) Rolando , Sandy ; grandchildren , Jennifer Marie and Julie Antoinette Rolando ; Michelle Martinez , Yvette Smith and Brandon Martinez ; four great-grandchildren ; brothers , John B. ( Pauline ) , Salt Lake City ; Nikolas B. , San Rafael , Calif. ; Dr. George B. ( Peggy ) , Oswego , N.Y. ; sister , Elvera ( Nikki ( Sanford C. ) Senor Price ; and special feline companion , Tyki.
