Christine Nguyen, Deputy Administrator at Asian Resources, Inc. (ARI), has been named one of KVIE's Local Heroes.Nguyen won in the category of Young 'New Generation' Southeast Asian Community leaders, and is the first Vietnamese woman to receive the award that was presented at the 2005 Asian Pacific American Heritage Local Hero Awards Ceremony on May 3rd.
Nguyen came to the United States as a refugee from the Vietnam War.At nine-years-old, she and her family arrived in Indiana.Within a short time, the family relocated to Sacramento, which became home to them all.
Nguyen started working as a Youth Counselor and Community Worker at ARI in 1994 while still a student at UC Davis.She stayed with the organization until 1997 when she became a Client Services Regional Manager for Child Action, Inc.In 2001, she returned to ARI as Deputy Administrator and has been an integral part of the organization ever since.
As Deputy Administrator, Nguyen is responsible for overseeing the operation of three offices and 25 staff, ensuring the smooth day-to-day administration of the agency and that the annual funding is adequate to achieve its mission.
Above these daily responsibilities, Nguyen has been involved in much volunteer work within the community.She most recently spearheaded the 1st Annual Fortune Festival, showcasing the diverse Asian Pacific Island (API) commerce and culture on Stockton Blvd. In the past, Nguyen has had her hand in the TET festival and the API day for the Cal Expo State Fair, where she not only helped to organize the event, but also participated in a mother-daughter fashion show.
Most currently, she is coordinating the Fall of Saigon: 30 Years Remembrance at the State Capitol.This event commemorates 30 years of sacrifice, struggle and successes experienced by refugees of the Vietnam War.
Nguyen is a Board Member of Child Action, Inc., a prominent non-profit in Sacramento established in 1976 to provide for the education and social welfare of children and families by organizing, sponsoring and administering services to children.She is also a second-term Chairperson of the Edna Batey Elementary School's English Language Advisory Council.In this role, Nguyen advises school administrators on ways of improving instruction and giving support for English as a Second Language families.
Nguyen's relentless efforts to better the community have been consistent and highly regarded.She is a mentor to her employees, a role model for other Vietnamese women and a tireless advocate for the community.
