A familiar volunteer in Raytown, Missouri, John Ness is being honored by Truman Heartland Community Foundation for his many years of service.
Founded in 1982, The Truman Heartland Community Foundation is a public charity whose purpose is to receive, invest, administer and distribute assets for charitable purposes that primarily serve the communities of Jackson, Cass, Clay, Lafayette and Platte Counties in Missouri.
The Foundation has grown to regional prominence by promoting private giving for the public good.
Every year Truman Heartland honors those volunteers who so generously give of their time and talents.
John Ness has an impressive array of nonprofit activities.
He has been associated with the American Cancer Society -Raytown Chapter, and has served as its president.
With the ACS he has led different fundraising campaigns including selling daffodils and coordinating a golf tournament.
He has also been a member of the Raytown Area Chamber of Commerce for a number of years, and currently serves on the board of directors.
"Formerly I served as chairman of the board of the Chamber, was co-chair of the community BBQ, and helped organize the Roundup Parade."
Additionally, John served on the Board of Aldermen of the City of Raytown, on the board of the Cave Spring Association, a historical park in the area, and is a member of the Raytown Rotary Club and a past member of its board of directors.
"Through Rotary I have been very active in fundraising.
I also helped raise money for the Raytown Rotary Peace Plaza, which honors area veterans, through initiating and organizing a golf tournament.
John is himself a veteran, having served in the Navy during the Vietnam War.
How he became involved in the community is a unique story.

A native of Texas, John has been a resident of Raytown since 1977.

No novice to travel, John has been to all 50 states, and he and Judy recently took a Caribbean cruise to Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico.
He spent two years in Japan while in the Navy.
"I also am interested in photography, and of course with my passion for golf, I often try to tie that into my fundraising!"
John is retired from the real estate business, having been associated with Reese-Nichols, and still retains his license.
