"We're pretty much building a golf course from scratch all over again," said Nelson, who spent 10 days in South Africa in July with her parents, Dan and Kathy.
    ...
Kathy, a UNLV professor who specializes in global hospitality and event planning, has taken her only child to South Africa on three occasions to take part in a worldwide event management conference known as the International EMBOK Imbizo.
    ...
"She literally went to the president of the club and confronted him and said, ‘I don't want to be over here getting their hopes up if you're not going to let them play,' " Kathy Nelson said.

The president relented, saying that girls could play alongside the boys for free on Wednesdays and even caddie the rest of the week.

"(Chloe) seeing that she could have an impact like that was very life-changing (for her)," Kathy Nelson said.

Then the work began.Nelson had to create a practice range using buckets as targets and rope to mark off the hitting stations. She rounded up several clubs and 400 golf balls for the 18 girls who were chosen.Nelson had four hours to give an overview of the game and teach basic etiquette and short-game drills. There wasn't enough time to teach the full swing, but she could see that several of the girls took a liking to the sport.

They were especially grateful for the food and clothes that also were provided as part of the clinic sponsored by Events with Purpose.

"I asked the girls what some of their dreams are and a lot of them, because of the AIDS epidemic, want to become doctors so they can help their families out," Nelson said.
    ...
It's those kinds of stories that inspire Nelson and her family to return to this cluster of townships south of Johannesburg with more than a day's worth of hope.

Kathy Nelson is using students from her class at UNLV to work on fundraising.Gopher holes and an underground coal fire burning sand on the eighth hole are just a couple of the challenges Nelson's team faces in reconstructing this shell of a course. Not to mention the great costs involved with shipping supplies to Soweto.

But Nelson can't get the image of a tree branch posing as a flagstick out of her mind.So primitive and yet so pure.

"I want to be able to create a golf course where juniors can have the opportunity to try to do something for themselves," Nelson said."I know that some of them have the hardest work ethic known to mankind, and they will do whatever it takes to get out of poverty."

If she can just give them something to aim toward.
