    When working at Domino magazine, Deborah Needleman wanted to design a quiz to give readers insight into their personal decorating styles.

    But the founding editor in chief of the now-shuttered magazine never got around to it.

    So, Needleman was thrilled when she was approached by discount retail chain HomeGoods about creating the free StyleScope for its online community of passionate decorators.

    "I spent an embarrassingly long time doing it," she laughs. "That said, it was kind of a mathematical puzzle that was fun to figure out."

    As she puts it, HomeGoods' new online tool, at www.homegoods.com, is an apple that could have been sliced a lot of different ways.
