The option is seldom used, according to G.W. Neal, assistant superintendent and human resources director, because universities have become more user-friendly for teachers by scheduling classes on weekends, nights and afternoons and by offering online classes.
"It's something that's becoming obsolete," Neal said of the leave policy.
During a meeting of the NISD finance committee Tuesday afternoon, Neal discussed the recommendation with board members.

Aside from teachers rarely using the developmental leave option, Neal said filling a teacher's spot while that educator is on sabbatical can prove challenging.
"If you take developmental leave for one year, we have to go out and find someone willing to take that class for one year, and it's not often the experienced person you want in that position," he said.

Other aspects of the district's leave policy would not change, Neal said.NISD teachers receive five personal leave days each school year, and the district gives them five more sick days for personal illnesses or to care for a relative.
All 10 days of leave are available at the beginning of the year, Neal said, but teachers must earn them by working the whole year.
