In anticipation of their upcoming appearance, the Globetrotters sent Handles and the legendary Fred "Curly" Neal to the Police Activities Youth Center in Rockwood the afternoon of Thursday, Jan. 22.
    ...
Handles also acknowledged a quiet, smiling man decked out in Globetrotter garb and standing on the gym's sidelines, as his mentor and friend — Fred "Curly" Neal, who played for the Globetrotters from 1963 to 1985.

Anyone who grew up watching the baldheaded Neal play remembers an exemplary ball handler and classic clown who was immortalized for a generation of tube watchers when he and teammates such as Meadowlark Lemon were turned into Saturday morning cartoon characters in the Globetrotters' own series as well as on such shows as "Scooby Doo."

Curly walked among the youngsters, signing autographs and shaking hands. He also took a moment to show a young girl how to spin a basketball on the tip of a pen.

After the youngsters exited the gym, Curly noted the last year had been a reflective one for him, as his No. 22 was retired by the Globetrotters during a ceremony in Madison Square Garden last February.

"It was electricity in the air," he said.

He said he still enjoys sharing his love of basketball with young people.

"It's in my heart," he said. "God gave it to me, so I try to give it back to the kids."

As an ambassador of one of the nation's most famed African-American organizations, Curly said he was proud that America had recently inaugurated its first black president. He added that the Globetrotters actually played a game with Barack Obama recently and planned to give him a No. 44 jersey in recognition of his being the nation's 44th president.

Meeting the famous and powerful is old hat for Curly, however. He noted, for example, that the Globetrotters played for Pope Paul VI in 1968 at the Vatican.

The team settled a similar suit with six other players, including Fred "Curly" Neal, who now works as an ambassador for the team.

Neal, who lives in North Carolina and played 22 years for the Globetrotters, declined to talk about the lawsuit. Instead, he said he wanted to talk about the organization's positive reach.

"We are a family show, and we provide entertainment for those 9 to 99," Neal said.

Fred "Curly" Neal, a 22-year member of the Globetrotters (1963-1985), and five-year veteran Eugene "Wildkat" Edgerson were both in the Twin Cities March 27-28 to promote the team's three scheduled shows at Target Center April 11 (7 pm) and April 12 (1 and 7 pm).
    ...
"Mr. Neal and I, as ambassadors of goodwill, are here to spread the love of the Harlem Globetrotters," Edgerson said of their two-day schedule that included the school and hospital visits.
    ...
"We try to catch the kids at an early age, in elementary and middle schools, because they will take the time out to listen when we give positive speeches," explained Neal.
    ...
"We always believed in our basketball, and comedy came second," said Neal proudly.

After completing a stellar career at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, in the early 1960s, "I wanted to be a professional athlete," Neal said, "regardless of if it was the Globetrotters, the NBA, or what.
    ...
Neal was among five players who made the club in 1963.

Although better known as a scorer, Neal, who regularly hit shots from beyond half-court and played in over 6,000 games, joined the likes of Marques Haynes and "Gator" Rivers as a show-stopping ball handler.
    ...
"I hope to be around for a few more years," concluded a smiling Neal, happy in his present role with the team.
