"As firefighters, we all know what it's like to raise money," said chapter president Fred Neal of West Franklin Township."To raise money while being out on the road riding our bikes seemed like the perfect way to help those in need." In fewer than two years, the Red Knights chapter has grown to 40 members, from as far north as Grove City to as far south as Tarentum. "There is a brotherhood in the fire service and that carries over into the motorcycle rides," said Neal, an agent with the state Attorney General's Office and member of Worthington Fire Department."It's all about getting together doing something we love to do and having a fun time doing it." Even though the club has been active for a little more than a year, the Red Knights have already collected $2,500 in donations for the American Red Cross and for Mercy Hospital's McCauley Inn, which provides housing for families of burn patients at the hospital. "We know that firefighters aren't the only ones who help during fires and other disasters, and by giving money to places like the Red Cross, we know that they will be there to help the next time someone needs them," he said. The club also works with local fire departments to hold fundraisers that support the motorcycle club and the fire departments. "We held a special collection last year to give money to our brother and sister firefighters who were affected by the hurricanes," Neal said.

"It seems like food is always involved in the rides," Neal added.

"It's not always about the destination though, it's all about the journey," Neal said."We've ridden on some of the most scenic roads in the state and been to a lot of places we've never been before, and made tons of friends along the way." This summer the club is planning rides to the Tail of the Dragon at Deal's Gap in the Smoky Mountains, as well as a statewide Red Knights rally in Gettysburg. Anyone interested in joining the Red Knights, PA Chapter XVI, can do so by going to the Web site at www.redknightspa16.org.Applications and contact information is available on the site. "We are always looking for new members," Neal said.
