Miss Erna Elizabeth Neal, 89, of Summit Street passed away on January 4, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer.She was the youngest of seven children born to G. W. Neal Sr. and Kate Griffin Neal.Erna was born on January 28, 1919 in Walnut Cove in the home where she lived most of her life.She graduated from Brevard College and later from Winston-Salem Business College.After an eight year banking career, she joined the family business, Neal Hardware Company, where she worked for over fifty years, retiring as manager in 2003.Erna is remembered by her customers and friends for her friendliness, her helpfulness, her laughter, and her playful sense of humor.She was an enthusiastic supporter and member of many civic organizations in Walnut Cove including the Order of the Eastern Star, the Home Extension Club, the Public Library, and the Merchant's Association.Erna was an active member of Stokesburg United Methodist Church where she served as treasurer for thirty-one years.
