    VERMILLION -- Forty years of artistic expression will be in the spotlight this month as Dennis Navrat, art professor at The U, places his work on display in the main gallery of the College of Fine Arts at The University of South Dakota. The retrospective exhibition called "Imaging the Edge of Whirl," covering examples of Navrat's work spanning the period 1965-2005, will be on display through Jan. 31.

    The 100 works in the exhibition will include selections from eleven series of artistic creations completed by Navrat in the visual media of painting, printmaking, photography, and handmade paper art during his lengthy career as artist, teacher and administrator.

    Navrat plans to retire from the University of South Dakota at the end of spring semester 2005.

    Navrat, professor of art at The U since 1989, served as department chair through 1997. He serves as the College of Fine Arts international coordinator and as a visiting evaluator for the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Previously he taught at Dickinson State University (N.D.) from 1966-1989, at Southport College of Art, England, on a Fulbright-Hays scholarship during 1976-77 and at The Institute of Logopedics, Wichita, Kan. in 1965-66. He earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Wichita State University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Kansas State University.

    An artist since 1962, he has exhibited nearly 400 times in the Unites States, Africa, Canada, England and Germany, including 45 solo exhibitions. He specializes in handmade paper art, painting and mixed media and operates the Hummingbird Mill & Studio at his home in Vermillion.

    As an artist/educator in higher education since 1966, he has served community arts development, including appointments to the board of directors of the North Dakota Council on the Arts by three different Governors, serving for 12 years. He also served on the board of directors of the Vermillion Area Arts Council.

    As an artist/educator/administrator since 1971, he directed the Mind's Eye Gallery at Dakota State University for 21 years and has headed art departments for 18 years at both Dakota State University and The University of South Dakota.
