John Navarrette, 54, operations manager for Texas Markets at CenturyTel in San Marcos and the chair of the CTMC Foundation board, credits the Texas State Bobcats and the San Marcos Rattlers for keeping him young. And he credits the women in his lifeâ€"as well as CTMC's HealthCheckâ€"for keeping him healthy.John has supported HealthCheck for years. In fact, he makes sure that his company pays the $25 fee for each employee who wants to participate.
In 2005, John had his blood drawn at 7:30 a.m. At 9:30, his wife Chloe, who was John's emergency contact, received a call urging her to fi nd John and get himto his family physician immediately.
...
John doesn't like medication, so the treatment was daunting.Fortunately, John has Chloe."She told me she just didn't know how to help me, but she knew that the medicine could," he says."I told her it was in God's hands and that we had the best urologist we knew helping fight the infection and possible cancer."
After undergoing three biopsies in 18 months, John was relieved to find out in November 2006 that he did not have cancer."For over a year I had to basically put my life on hold," he says."I was oft en worried that the tests would show that I did in fact have cancer. It was something that I worried and prayed over daily."Even though John has educated himself and found treatment, he still tests at a 4.2 level. His doctor told him that is the level of a 70-year-old male.John hopes for a 3.4 once again, but is thankful for the great results he's had.
"I don't know what would have happened if I hadn't had that checkup," he says."The infection could have continued to progress and possibly even led to cancer."Like most of us, John has a lot of people depending on him, so he encourages others to take advantage of HealthCheck."We tend to put our moms or the kids first and we don't make time for our own health maintenance," he says.Luckily, because of John's participation in CTMC's HealthCheck, the hundreds of young people John calls "his kids" (San Marcos CISD and Texas State students) will have him in the stands and on the bus for many more years to come. -
