    ...
Rick Nathan, 57, became a Rough-Fit client 2-1/2 years ago, then joined the team as a certified personal trainer

Rick retired as a captain after 34 years with the Downey, California, Police Department and currently serves as a substitute teacher for the Tustin, California, Unified School District in addition to his work with the Rough-Fit team.

He enjoys supporting community youth activities and has coached Little League, soccer, softball and basketball.

Rick says his greatest strength as a trainer is being able to understand from personal experience what it takes to get in shape. I like to remind clients that it takes persistence, patience, a willing and winning attitude to become successful in reaching your goals. After retiring I made the decision that I needed to stay active and healthy, Rick says. I hadnt jogged in years and had never competed in a race. After training and setting goals with Rough-Fit, my son and I competed in the Camp Pendleton 10K mud run and finished! What a feeling!Looking around during the race, I saw young teenagers like my son, young adults, and runners in their 50s, 60s, 70s and even several in their 80s!I realized then that with the right attitude, training and a healthy lifestyle, you can accomplish things you never thought you could do! He has since competed in numerous 5K and 10K runs. Mapping out how to accomplish what clients thought was impossible and then watching them achieve their goals is fantastic, Rick says. I love helping new clients who say, I cant do pushups anymore, then showing them that, not only can they do one but, with some effort and training, they can complete an entire set of pushups!

Rick is certified by the International Fitness Association as an aerobics and fitness instructor and by the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a certified personal trainer. He holds a CPR certification from the American Heart Association and has a Bachelor of Science degree from California State University, Los Angeles.Rick and his wife, Fausta, also a Rough-Fit member, have been married for 21 years and have two children, a daughter in college and a son who is a junior in high school.
