Jack Myrick, director of faith-based programs at the Oklahoma Marriage Initiative, said the goal of Edmond Date Night is to support and strengthen marriages.Following that premise, couples will participate in a short session on healthy marriages after dinner.Afterward, they will be encouraged to stay for an activity hosted by the church, or they can spend couple-time elsewhere.

Myrick said three other Edmond churches have agreed to be initial host churches: First Presbyterian Church of Edmond, First Christian Church of Edmond and New Covenant United Methodist Church.
    ...
Myrick said the idea is to help couples connect with one another by spending time alone together more often.

"One of the indicators of marital satisfaction is spending time together, but research shows us that couples between the ages of 25 and 40 aren't finding time for it," he said.

Myrick said many couples are busy with obligations, or they have kids and may have trouble getting a babysitter. He said lack of money for child care or a restaurant meal and movie keeps some couples from an evening of couple time.

Myrick said Edmond Night Out should help change that for willing couples.
    ...
Myrick said the different ways men and women perceive dating can pose trouble for some couples. He said in one study, men gave a different answer than their wives about how much time had elapsed since their last date.Myrick said because of the different dating perceptions of the genders, men were more likely to say less time had gone by since they last romanced their wives.

He said a man is more likely to think that a quick stop for ice cream cones on the way home from the home improvement store serves as a date, while his wife is more likely to think a date is a meal at a nice restaurant and a movie afterward.

"It's not always about the money. They may just see things differently."

Myrick said the short marriage discussions after date-night dinners will focus on the importance of communication skills. Also, couples will be presented ideas for inexpensive dates and other helpful resources such as Financial Peace University classes offered in the community.

Most of all, he said, couples will be encouraged to have more fun together.

Jack Myrick, director of faith-based programs at the Oklahoma Marriage Initiative, said he is pleased that churches continue to offer the free weddings.

"This particular strategy is great for several reasons," he said.

"The first thing is getting married is taxing financially, so this is a great service to the couple. The second thing is one of the big needs of couples today is other positive couples. That sense of community is huge," he said, referring to the small-group formats at Harmony and Unity.

During a very difficult, low point in his business career, Jack Myrick found himself looking at those working with him and blaming them for his circumstances. He thought, "If they would just do their jobs like they were supposed to then I wouldn't be in this situation."

At the end of his rope, Jack took some time off for reflection. By stepping back and looking at his situation he realized he had two choices: either quit and find a new career or change. By being totally honest with himself, he discovered that before his circumstances could change, he had to change.

Jack began to ask himself, "What kind of leader could turn this situation around?

Jack Myrick, facilitator and the Oklahoma Marriage Initiative's community events director, said statistics show Oklahoma has the second-highest divorce rate in the nation and couples have a 50 percent chance of divorcing. He said research shows couples that go through the course can reduce their chances of divorce by 50 percent.

"We go and learn how to play piano from an instructor. We go to school to be a fireman," Myrick said.
    ...
Myrick said the workshop will help couples reduce and manage conflict in a safe way. He'll go over four danger signs that can kill relationships, and show couples how to identify the signs and minimize them.

Myrick stressed the skills-based program isn't like group counseling, it helps couples learn specific skills and real strategies.

"We don't sit around and open up and share feelings," Myrick said."We don't sit around and sing 'Kumbaya.'"

The format is conducted in a non-threatening way and couples can be as vocal or as quiet as they wish.He said part of the seminar includes reminding couples how they can keep the fun in relationships and keep the friendship alive.

"Friendship is huge," Myrick said, adding children, careers and busy lifestyles often get in the way of maintaining friendship."What gets squeezed out is friendship in the relationship."

Myrick said OMI is training about 35,000 couples each year, but the training has never been conducted in Enid.

    "We're just thrilled," Myrick said.
