Dr. Elena Mustakova-Possardt

Elena Mustakova-Possardt was born in Sofia, Bulgaria.In 1990 she went to the U.S.A. to pursue doctoral work in human development at the University of Massachusetts.During this time, in 1993, she was introduced to the Faith and became a Bahá'í.

Dr. Mustakova-Possardt is currently an Associate Professor in Psychology at the University of West Georgia as well as being a Licensed Professional Counselor in private practice.Her work in re-thinking the field of moral psychology in the context of the study of critical consciousness won her the 1995 Dissertation Award of the Henry A. Murray Research Center for the Study of Lives at Harvard University and in 1998 the Best Dissertation of the Year Award of the Association for Moral Education.She teaches courses in Moral, Social and Spiritual Development, Transpersonal Psychology and Health Realization Counseling as well as Psychotherapy, Cross-Cultural Community Development and Prevention.

Elena Mustakova-Possardt is also involved in extensive pro-bono work with immigrant Hispanic populations in rural West Georgia.

The mental health services, which are coordinated by Dr. Elena Mustakova-Possardt of the psychology department at UWG, offer counseling to families, to children, and to adolescents.

In addition to the Housing Authority and Tanner Health System, Dr. Gonzalez also credits Dr. Elena Musticova-Possardt of UWG, as well as Carrollton city council members, members of the Sheriff's Department and Police Department, and the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce with helping to ensure that the program reaches those in need.

Her cross-cultural research on critical consciousness received the 1998 Best Dissertation of the Year Award of the American Association for Moral Education, as well as the 1995 Henry A. Murray Dissertation Award of Radcliffe College, Harvard.She has published articles in several professional journals, and contributed a chapter in a book on Spirituality, Ethics, and Relationships in Adulthood . Her book, Critical consciousness: A Study of Morality in Global Historical Context , was recently (2003) published in Greenwood 's Contributions to psychology series.Dr. Mustakova-Possardt teaches and specializes in lifespan development, moral, social and spiritual development, cross-cultural community development, and clinical counseling.She is a licensed professional counselor applying a holistic psycho-spiritual approach to her cross-cultural work with individuals, couples, and marginalized populations.Her commitment is to integrative peace studies and the global fostering of critical consciousness and health to assist humanity in its difficult transition toward unification.

Elena Mustakova-Possardt, professor of psychology at the University of West Georgia, counsels immigrants in Carroll County.She said crossing the Mexican border can be traumatic.In some cases, families are separated or become victims of violence.

"The coyotes can be pretty ruthless," she said, using the nickname for those who smuggle refugees.The immigrants "come here and for a while they have to heal from the horror."Once here, she said, they face the additional stress of living on the fringes of smaller communities.
