Luckily, Marwan Mustaklem, MD, is making house calls.

Dr. Mustaklem, a member of the medical staff of Coppola Medical Associates and Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island, started venturing out of the offices in January, going into patients' homes one afternoon a week and hoping to revive a practice abandoned four decades ago.

Beyond checking vital signs and other medical issues, Dr. Mustaklem can offer advice on the patient's environment at home.He may suggest, for example, a different chair for an arthritis sufferer who finds it difficult to get out of a low seat.

"I can suggest alternatives to make things easier and safer for them and keep them from falling," he said.

The response to the house calls has been tremendous, both doctors agreed.

"It's a great alternative for people who would like to stay at home but need periodic medical attention," Dr. Mustaklem said.

Dr. Mustaklem said house calls were part of a geriatric rotation he completed in his residency and he saw it as a way to help people.

"We're trying to start a trend, start people thinking.The elderly should have better care rather than struggling to get into the office for visits," he said.
