NEW MATAMORAS - Even during the lean years, which were few, Frontier High School football coach Russ Morris enjoyed teaching kids the game.
,We've had two losing seasons in the 11 years I've been head coach, and even in those years I had some great kids to work with,, said Morris, who leads the Cougars into the Division VI state playoffs Friday night at home against the Danville Blue Devils.
,I think of myself a teach er first and a coach second,, Morris continued. ,Even on the field, I think of myself as a teacher trying to teach the game. It's a chance to work with young people.
,I never dread going to work.,
Morris graduated from Frontier in 1986.As a football player, he considered himself ,average at best., During his four years in high school, the Cougars managed just eight wins.
After attending the University of Rio Grande, Morris hooked on as an assistant under Vince Elder for four years. He also credits Williamstown defensive coordinator Ben Preston and his father Rusty Morris as major influences on his coaching career.
,My dad didn't coach football, but he coached me through the years in other sports,, Russ Morris said.
Morris also credits his wife Sheryl for her support.Together, they have a daughter Samantha, who is in kindergarten this year.
