    ...
There are many young persons who look up to Mr Morris and especially his writing style and his aim to always bring both sides to a story.Let us have the truth.

PS: Understand he is currently overseas - why did he run away?
    ...
Mr Morris to my mind is one of the better and more honest journalists in Barbados.

Surely he has earned and deserves some respect before we lynch him in a court of public opinion?

It is healthy to be skeptical of any of these charges with so much control of the local press by so few who may have another agenda.

Lets start with who is on the Board and was he fired?

I am not saying that Mr. Morris is not to blame but don't put all the blame on him, the girl is also at fault. And yes, he cheated on his wife, but infedility is no crime, at least not by law.
    ...
Roy Morris?Who the devil would have expected better? All he ever wrote about were minibuses and ZR vans…gimme a break…good riddance to bad rubbish.

    ...
For one, Mr. Morris was a superb administrator, and made a significant contribution to journalism during his 28 year stint at the Nation.Secondly, it is quite obvious the man does have a problem, and needs psychological counselling.

Now, the real issue, is one of morality and consciousness. The young woman involved is of a consensual age, so therefore a crime has not been committed, once we are in receipt of the true facts surrounding the incident.

What is unfortunate, is that Mr. Morris clearly used his managerial status as a weapon, to entice the girl in his direction, and that's where morality becomes an issue.Having sex, or even cheating is not a crime. It is commonplace in the world we live in, but the question must be asked about what kind of conscience Mr. Morris has, when he can entice a teenage girl, and take her from his place of employment, a place where his wife also works.

Now that's just dumb, but shows he does have a problem which can only be healed through counselling.Even if the girl has fallen for him, he cold have arranged a meeting, and not drive her away from his place of employment.

And let's not forget that the company had to intervene in a similar case before.

Mr. Morris does have plenty to offer to journalism, but clearly needs help.

The main question is, does the company forgive him after two horrible and embarrassing moments, fire him because he's become a liability to their corporate image, or punish him severely (again) and let him remain in their system but away from the public eye.
    ...
Listen to me you all negative people….. we are going to kill Roy for what!!!! she give the damm man consent ease off of him.
    ...
What the defenders and protectors of Roy must realise is that the lack of sympathy from some is evoked because Roy has had his fair share of a "piece" of many people in this society. He has been callous in his condemnation and not more than a little self-righteous in defending the hurtful features he has been instrumental in constructing where certains sectors of society and certain persons are concerned. He has reminded many that they need to be able to accept criticism etc.Well it is his turn now, and it is not pleasant. That's life.I believe that he, and some of those gloating and relishing in his nasty comeuppance should remember that "…there but for the grace of God go I."
    ...
Mr. Morris must know about this article by now.If those emails were totally false I expect he would have said something by now or the Nation would have said something by now.

Every day that Morris or the newspaper don't say something looks bad for Morris.

Too bad for all and I mean that.I liked his writing.
    ...
BFP need to ask the officers why did they tell Slinger to ask Roy for his gun.BFP should live up to its name and give us the facts.People should have sympathy also for those females who have suffered in the past and stop behaving as though this man has been so badly wronged that those who raise queries are crucifying him. This is not an isolated incident and yes he definitely needs help.I will pray earnestly for him since I liked his writing style and enjoyed his articles.
    ...
Red Lake Lassie is right to say this story has been read by now by the Nation peoples and Morris.

I call The Nation yesterday and ask if Roy still working there.
    ...
All that would have happened in that instance is people would say "Wait you hear about Roy and so-and-so?"No-one would have ever considered taking it this far.

All I hope is that this is no sick ploy from the girl or her parents to swindle money out of Roy because of the position he holds at the Nation.
    ...
In the mean time, I sympathise with Roy and his family, all of whom cannot be going through an easy time right now.
    ...
Mr. Morris could attest to this since as a senior manager I'm sure he would have presided over situations where accusations were made against staff and after internal investigations he had to make a decision to let the person go.

    ...
And if Roy is guilty he falls into that "NO- GOOD" bracket!!!However, I think we need some facts regarding the accusations.

Roy spent many a day searching for transparency in government, and recently two of his exposes were on alleged strong-arm tactics of the police and immoral behaviour of school children.

The police should NOW show the transparency that Roy requested and clear his name or arrest him.

    Destroyed femaleJuly 26, 2007 at 11:12 am

Well people like unrighteous should read the Barbdos Underground story on the matter which verifies what the informed bloggers here were saying all along.I am shocked that BU and by extension BFP thinks that it has to protect Roy Morris, who has fearlessly pursued people in public.Well the lowdown is that he is definitely parting with the company. This was announced to staff on Tuesday by the President. But to think that he will be rewarded with a consultancy.Since he is still telling colleagues or now former colleagues that he has done nothing wrong it means that there is no remorse. The Barbados Underground blames his colleagues who observed his behaviour without doing anything.Don't blame his colleagues. After the incident with the former reported who now lives overseas he was supposed to get counseliing - but as one of the top managers, who would have reprimanded him for not going. What should have been the penalty for not attending counselling?I think he should have at least beeen arrested and then do like many others, try to negotiate a the same $50,000 settlement. So he is not arrested. There is no record and he is left to do it again.
    ...
We will gripe about Roy til the cows come home bit how many of our families sell drugs, are alcoholics, chid and women abusers ………… sin is sin no matter what form it comes in…… go figure."Happiness is a state of MINE"

Veteran Bajan journalist Roy Morris is in court tomorrow on a rape charge.Morris was the Nation News Associate Managing Editor in July when the alleged rape occurred. He was arrested and charged by police on August 14th after Barbados blogs refused to let the story die.

The story was broken by the Barbados Free Press after the Nation News ignored the police investigation of their employee. Some sources even indicated that the Nation News conspired with Morris to hide him from the police.

Whether or not Morris is found guilty, the story was a watershed for many Barbadians who discovered that the blogs not only break the news, but that the largest newspaper in the country habitually withholds news from the public.

    ...
My friends, on Tuesday, August 14, 2007, veteran journalist Roy Morris was charged with rape by the Royal Barbados Police Force. He was released on bail after appearing in court.

This article is not about Roy's guilt or innocence, or about the specifics of the criminal allegations. This article is about whether or not Bajan blogs impacted the decision of the police and the prosecutors to bring formal charges against a well known and influential journalist.

During the past four weeks everyone heard the rumours - whether from a friend at work, at the local rum shop, online at various Bajan blogs and chat sites or while on the ZR after school. Now, after four weeks of uncertainty and rumours Mr. Morris has been charged and he will face his accuser in court.

Would Mr. Morris have been charged at all if various Barbados blogs hadn't carried the story?

Morris, of Warrens Park, St Thomas, was not required to plead to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a 16-year-old female.
    ...
On Monday, July 23, 2007, sources within the Nation News contacted Barbados Free Press and informed us that Associate Managing Editor Roy Morris had been asked for his resignation after an alleged sexual impropriety with a female several days earlier. We were also informed us that Mr. Morris was nowhere to be found and that the entire matter was being hushed up by both the Nation News and the Royal Barbados Police Force. We were told that Anne Gittens loaned her car to Morris to help him avoid the police during the first few days.

We were told that the management at The Nation News sent journalist Timothy Slinger to camp out on the doorstep of Police Commissioner Dottin to call in a favour for Roy Morris - to have the investigation sidetracked.

BFP reader and commenter "Mr.Know" has been an accurate source of information about the Morris case from the beginning. (It is also interesting that "Mr.Know" always uses an anonymous proxy IP when posting, so we at Barbados Free Press or anyone else couldn't possibly discover his or her identity).

Yesterday when we were informed that Morris was about to be arrested and charged, we published our article - Source: Barbados Journalist Roy Morris At Oistins Police Station - Arrested, Charged In Sex Assault Case.In response, reader Passin Thru said…

And Roy is not a big up.
    ...
Barbados is too small for people like Roy because he did it before about 10 yrs ago with a pretty young ting who used to work at the advocate and Oistins again was the station of choice but next thing you know she was fired and got about $30 000 which she probably spent on a Gucci bag and two trips.I would buy land.Land doesn't waste and he still had his job.Speaking of land, Roy could hide and buy land but he can't hide and wuk it.
    ...
I hear Roy is home on sedatives while his wife is cussing him daily and gracefully walking in the Nation head held high.Go girl.
    ...
But wait, the women were going to riot, no strike, to keep Roy.Looka, I glad none of my girl relatives wuk there! But I do not have all the facts of the case, so let's see how it plays out.My guess is an acquittal cos the girl will refuse to testify and he will be back at his desk ordering about people and denigrating his wife.

Why persons close to Roy Morris's case suggest that there is insufficient evidence to justify the charge, the overwhelming concern by each person associated with the investigation was "…I really do not want to be the one who appears to have given Roy an easy time or let him off the hook, …but if this was a report involving two ordinary citizens it would have been 'REJECTED THOUGHTS' by the station Sergeant and the Superintendent in charge of the division."We where once told that in politics it is perception rather than reality and truth that matters.Barbados has now reached a sorry state in its administration of justice because the major players have now accepted that perception is also the major factor in the dispensation of JUSTICE.That said: I sincerely hope that when Roy Morris is vindicated that he uses his position, influence and contacts within the media to ensure that ordinary Barbadians no longer suffer a similar plight simply because of reporters and journalists unbridled, reckless and relentless pursuit for a byline and the editors and companies desire for increased circulation, readers, listeners and viewership.Just to remind Roy Morris that "…the worst bite one receives is a bite from his/her own dog."Whether it was the Heat, Advocate, The Nation or The Barbados Free Press he was well and truly BITTEN…By a cross between reporters and journalists.

NOW LEAVE ROY ALONE AND LET TRUE JUSTICE TAKE ITS COURSE!!!!

Nobody knows exactly what happened with Roy Morris of The Nation News, but for two days now Barbados Free Press and Barbados Underground have been covering the story and rumours of a cover-up surrounding the veteran journalist's alleged sexual impropriety with a 16 year old female. (See BFP's Roy Morris Told To Resign From The Nations News ! ?)
    ...
Roy is out of the county, he is on sick leave, he is on the run.The President at The Nation News gave Roy his car so the police couldn't find him driving his own vehicle - Roy's blue pajero was abandoned at The Nation for three days. The girl's family has been paid off by The Nation News and this isn't the first time… or not.

Police have done forensic tests on Roy Morris' vehicle and the young lady's clothing…. or they were ordered by the investigating officer and then canceled through corrupt intervention by Commission Dottin.Yes?No?
    ...
After reading BU's The Demise of Roy Morris: Veteran Journalist At The Nation Newspaper we heartily agree with David's assessment of the situation - but we think he has left out some of the other cultural factors at work.
    ...
In the Roy Morris case we heard rumours that management at The Nation News sent journalist Timothy Slinger to camp out on the doorstep of Police Commissioner Dottin to call in a favour for Roy Morris - to have the investigation sidetracked.
    ...
While Mr. Morris and all of us are in the end responsible for our own actions, the Roy Morris situation - and what has happened so far - is also a symptom of the worst of Bajan culture and corrupt leadership from the top on down.
    ...
If the girl said that Morris forced himself on her and the police didn't take the girl for an exam that tells the whole story.
    ...
I do not know the specific details of the case involving Roy Morris, but what I do know is although there might appear to be no link between the case of the Chinese Workers at the Four Seasons Project on which I wrote earlier today - there is - a disregard for the law when it is expedient by certain sections of our society.
    ...
If Mr. Morris is suspected of committing a criminal offence, it is the duty and responsibility of the RBPF to investigate the matter and either profer charges against him or allow his name to be cleared. If he was a 'nobody' his picture and charges would have been all over the court pages of the same Nation long time!

Since 1998, the Government has deliberately? been dragging its feet on the passage of Sexual Harassment legislation in this country.Such legislation or even a properly written and clearly communicated policy adopted by the management of the Nation could have been used to address Mr. Morris' alleged affliction years ago, well before the three or more incidents which culminated in his recent departure took place.

All I can say to the persons at the Nation/RBPF brass who appear to have done more to shield him than his alleged victim is that would your response have been different had the object of Mr. Morris' advances been your young daughter or son?

If this man keep getting away with this unacceptable behaviour and then being shielded all the time, damn right he will not have any remorse, and he will keep doing it over and over and over again. (Or till he mess wid de wrong body 16 year old child and some parent take the law in their own hands, following which you will see the parent picture and charges blast all over de said same Nation Newspaper, then subsequently we will read a glowing eulogy and tribute to Mr. Morris that will inevitably describe him in glowing terms as one of the pioneers of the journalism field in Barbados in the obituaries section whose loss will be greatly missed etc etc).
    ...
I love Barbados but these things just are not right Roy, Dottin and Simmons such be made an example for de whole of Barbados but hey who is going to do it surely not de PM or de GG .
    ...
As for Roy someday you will have your day in court maybe not on this earth but GOD will be waiting for you.Good Luck
