    Professor Estela Moreno-Mazzoli, head of the Spanish department at Oakland University, said the terms Hispanic and Latino are used only in the United States.

    "In their own countries, people identify themselves according to their nationalities; you are a Cuban, Chilean, Costa Rican, etc.," Moreno-Mazzoli said.

    But as Moreno-Mazzoli pointed out, the term Latin was coined by Napoleon the third who, to justify his imperialist designs on Mexico, said that the French and the Spaniards as well as the members of Spain's colonies were all "Latins."
