The recent grant received by KISSS is for three years, said Rosa Moreno, AmeriCorps program officer, but the program has to submit mini-applications during the second and third years to make sure it still complies with regulations.Collins said KISSS AmeriCorps has received the grant since 1994.Last year, the program received $350,000 in funding, which will increase this year to $423,000.
KISSS's grant application went through a complicated process before it was chosen from among this year's 56 applicants.
First, AmeriCorps recruited peer reviewers from across the state to read the applications and consider three areas: program design, organizational capacity and budget/cost effectiveness.Once the peer reviewers read the applications and made their recommendations, the proposals went on for staff review.
The final decision came from the Texas Commission on Volunteerism and Community Services board of commissioners, which is appointed by the governor, as to which programs had the most community impact.
Just talking with any of the KISSS volunteers or the groups they assist reveals stories about the program's impact in the Killeen area.
