"Every year we get students who are new to the country and at the high school level, what we see is that they're not only new to the country, but that they've had limited or interrupted schooling," said Andrea Moreno-Dawson, assistant principal at the district's new Guyer High School, where the Newcomer classes will be offered.

Andrea Dawson, assistant principal at Guyer High School, said students are expected to learn English and work on the same level with their peers.

"ESL classes are very much parallel to a regular English class," Dawson said.
