The group will begin to address factors that can lead to increases in substance abuse among young people and the detrimental effects illicit drugs can have on all aspects of a community, said Phil Mooring, executive director of Wilson Families in Action, the organization that helped start the coalition.
Input from leaders such as Wilson County Sheriff Wayne Gay and Wilson Police Chief Harry Tyson should help participants understand some of the problems associated with underage substance abuse, which can hinder economic development and overwhelm the court system and social services, Mooring said.

The coalition's mission is to ensure all areas of the community, from schools to the courts, collaborate and enact multiple strategies that will tackle underage substance abuse problems, Mooring said.

"So far it looks like we have 45 confirmed, and I'm absolutely delighted at the response," Mooring said.
