Samuel W. MooreSamuel Walton Moore , 79 , formerly of North Platte , died Oct. 29 , 2001 , at Kearney
He was born on March 4 , 1922 , the eldest son of John Roy Sr. and Urah Jane Beaver Moore in a sod house at Gandy.He attended school in Gandy and graduated in May of 1941.After graduating , he worked for his parents in the Garfield Table area and also for other farmers until he was drafted into the U.S. Army on Oct. 7 , 1942.
On May 20 , 1943 , he married Lenora Arlene Nielsen while on furlough in North Platte.He went to Camp Campbell , Ky. , for boot training , then on maneuvers in Tennessee , then to Camp Barkley , Texas , and eventually overseas to England , Germany , Austria.He was close to the Swiss border when the war ended.He earned several ribbons , two battle stars and decorations , one of which was from the French Government.After his discharge on Jan. 1 , 1946 , he had several different jobs in the North Platte area including Birdwood Alfalfa Mill , Day Milling Company , Spelts Lumber Company , Flicker Packing Company , the Union Pacific Railroad.He then worked at the Pacific Fruit Express Company working on refrigeration cars and trailers until he was forced to retire in 1976 due to open heart surgery and vascular disease.
Mr. Moore enjoyed hunting , fishing and camping with his family.He built his own pontoon boat a few years before he retired.He later took up woodworking , latch hook rugs and leather work as hobbies.He was very active in the union while working for the railroad and was local chairman and president of the local lodge..He also held the office of vice general chairman and secretary-treasurer of the Joint Protective Board of the Pacific Fruit Express Company for many years and was still paying dues to the lodge..He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a past member of the American Legion.
