Summer school Principal Lana Moore said typically 10 to 20 students graduate each summer, and the students resemble a rainbow since each graduate wears the gap and gown from their home high school. They also receive the diploma from their home school.
The reasons students attend the summer program vary."They might have failed a class, or attendance may have been an issue or they may have had an illness," she said.
The students have overcome some obstacle to earn their degree, said Moore, who serves as assistant principal of the school system's flexible evening high school program during the school year.Their diploma "means as much if not more" to them then their peers who graduated on time. And the ceremony, she said, means a lot to the parents and family members.
Class size is kept small during the summer -- typically fewer than 10 students to one teacher, Moore said.
Rodgers said she found the class size helpful, adding there were opportunities to work one-on-one.
