Bill Mooney, the director of terminals for Viterra, takes over the new post effective immediately and will operate out of the company's Okotoks, Alta. office, Viterra announced Thursday.

Mooney has been in the grain industry since the early 1980s, working for James Richardson International (JRI) up to the position of vice-president of organizational development, until he left the Winnipeg company six years ago to join Saskatchewan Wheat Pool.

While in charge of Viterra's port operations, Mooney was also named in February this year to represent the grain industry on the board of the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation.

As Viterra's VP for livestock and feed services, Mooney replaces Bill McGill, who will help in the transition and retire next year, the company said.

As for Mooney, "with over 24 years in the industry Bill is a well-respected, proven performer whose strong track record of execution will be a definite asset going forward," Malecha said in the same release.

"Though we knew this engine was a big fuel saver with extremely low emissions, we were astonished at its tractive effort," says Bill Mooney, Viterra's Director of Terminals."While using only one of the NREC locomotive's two GenSets (700 HP), we could pull 28 loaded grain cars at a time from the staging tracks over a railroad grade crossing to our elevators, versus only 12 cars when using our 1,200 HP unit. This means we can cut the number of times we block that very busy crossing by one-half to one-third."

Mooney added that during unloading operations, Pacific was able to handle 18 cars compared to six with its existing switcher, thereby further reducing traffic interruptions at another road crossing.

Mooney noted that reducing the frequency of grade crossings is important to the entire Port of Vancouver since there is very heavy container truck and other traffic.

With construction of high output elevators "we just couldn't compete in any viable way whatsoever" in this district.Mooney said they looked at the situation again in early 2001 and saw that they could not compete.Pioneer Grain will encourage their customers to deal with their elevator at Luseland, Sask.A decision to shut down an operation is not easy, adds Mooney and points out that they knew they would not have a future in the district during the next year.

Records show that Pioneer Grain appeared on the scene at Hayter in 1913 when the grain company took out a lease from the CPR and put up a 28,000 bushel operation. It is not clear exactly when the building began. An addition-which became the main elevator was built in 1935 by Leach Construction with space for another 50,000 bushels being provided. In 1982 a new office and shed was built and in 1985 a 34,000 bushel steel building was added.

James Richardson International has offices and facilities in six Canadian provinces and operates world-wide.
