RON MONCUR - Wrestling 1978-1982 (1996)Ron Moncur ruled the wrestling mat during his five-year tenure as a varsity athlete not only at the University of Calgary but also in Canada West and at the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union level.Moncur also dominated at the Senior National club level during his distinguished career.
A native of Kitchener, Ontario, Moncur dominated his weight division while competing as member of the University of Calgary wrestling team beginning in 1978 and concluding in 1982.During his varsity career Ron captured five consecutive Canada West wrestling titles never losing a Conference wrestling bout.At the CIAU level he won four national titles in the 48KG division and did not loose match until losing in the gold medal final in fifth and final year of varsity eligibility.
Moncur was named University of Calgary Male Athlete of the Year in 1980.
He competed internationally for Canada winning the gold medal at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Sheffield, England and also competed in the 1978 Commonwealth Games as well as being an alternate on the 1976 Canadian Olympic Team and was a member of the Canada Cup Wrestling Team in 1979.In 1980 he placed fourth in World Cup competition.
In addition to being involved in sport as a athlete, Ron had the distinction of being selected to attend the International Olympic Academy in Greece while a student at the University of Calgary in 1981.
Ronald Moncur was inducted into the University of Calgary Athletic Hall of Fame on October 17, 1996 and subsequently inducted into the Saskatchewan Hall of Fame in Regina, SK.
He graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor Physical Education degree in 1980 and Bachelor of Education degree in 1982.
