Founded in October by Brian Monahan, Wave Logic moved its offices and manufacturing facility in Scotts Valley in January. The company has eight full-time employees; together, they have more than 50 years experience in the automated identification field.

Monahan, 48, of Live Oak, was director of engineering at Escort Memory Systems in Scotts Valley, a provider of RFID, radio frequency identification solutions. He is listed as inventor on five U.S. patents for RFID-based products.

When Escort Memory's parent company, DataLogic Automation, decided to merge its U.S. offices into one location in Hebron, Ky., and move the headquarters for the RFID unit to Bologna, Italy, Monahan proposed to take over the legacy products and retain many of his co-workers.

"It's hard to leave Santa Cruz," he said.

Monahan contends lower costs are creating more opportunities for using RFID.

A standard tag could cost 30-40 cents while a more rugged tag used in industrial settings could run 80 cents apiece up to $80 or more, he said.Prices can vary based on volume and features.

Ten years ago there were very few companies marketing RFID products, but today there are hundreds, Monahan said.

"Unlike many RFID start-ups, our knowledge and experience in RFID development and solutions implementation makes Wave Logic a more mature company," says Brian Monahan, CEO, President and Founder of Wave Logic. Monahan believes that while the RFID arena is becoming rapidly populated with new companies, Wave Logic will be competitive because he and his team of dedicated employees are industry veterans with more than 50 collective years experience in the automated identification field.

"Our experience gives us an edge because we offer a deep understanding of our customer's requirements," he adds. "Knowledge, innovation, and quality are our strong suits. We possess the creativity, flexibility, and hands-on field expertise required to deliver products to an active market."

Prior to founding Wave Logic, Monahan was the Director of Engineering for Escort Memory Systems, an RFID solutions provider in Scotts Valley. Monahan was responsible for the design and development of many new products in the EMS line of RFID readers and tags and is listed as inventor on five U.S. patents for RFID-based products. RFID-based solutions engineered by Wave Logic include a wireless hand-held reader for libraries that locates books stored on the wrong shelf, and facilitates self-checkout of library media by patrons.

Other Wave Logic research and design projects are underway with GE Global Research to develop healthcare solutions based on RFID to ensure quality control for biomedical processes, and automated document archival and retrieval solutions for government judicial agencies.

While running Wave Logic, Monahan continues to research and pursue new opportunities for existing products, while formulating designs for fresh technologies to address what he sees as an underserved market.
