"With staging your home properly, you do make more money when selling," said Jade Mitchell, a Royal Lepage Triland realtor with seven years' experience in the London market.
Professional home staging is big business in Toronto, with its higher property values and different mindset, she said."London hasn't totally jumped on board yet.
"I usually do the home myself, but I have had to call in stagers in the past," said Mitchell, whose list of do's and don'ts for home-sellers starts with making the home smell nice.
She also heads to all-important open houses with a stash of handy staging items to help dress up clients' homes.
"I usually tell a person to tone down personal items like family photos, which is quite easy to do," she said."And if there's a big floral couch, I have white throws from Ikea I use, things like that.
"But in no way is what I do comparable to what a professional stager can do," she added."From my experience, it's a fabulous service and it makes our job so much easier, but it's a whole different mentality."
For example, if a home is vacant and the client has the resources, "staging is a great tool to use," she said.
