Nor does Dr. Mark Milunski understand why a diagnosis took so long, given the symptoms and the known stroke risk in migraine sufferers, especially younger women who might be on birth control pills or smokers.

"It's a stroke unless proven otherwise in a case like this," said Milunski, Orlando cardiologist and spokesman for the American Heart Association. However, in general, he added, he does not know whether treatment is less aggressive in women than in men.

"I think physicians need to talk to their patients more about the symptoms of stroke and its risk factors," he said.

The suggestion that women, for example, are not put on anticoagulant therapy to improve blood flow as often as men, Milunski said, might be a matter of "is it offered and then refused? We don't know."

Women tend to minimize their risks for cardiovascular disease, he said.

"Quite honestly, women still worry more about breast cancer than cardiovascular disease," he said. "But cardiovascular disease kills more women than all female cancers combined."

As to unique risk factors that only women experience, the idea makes him cringe, he said.

One percent to 3 percent of patients with medicated stents experience such blood clots, said Hitt's cardiologist, Dr. Mark Milunski.

"The reasons for that aren't entirely well-known," Milunski said.Doctors are conducting tests to make sure Hitt isn't aspirin-resistant.

Milunski emphasized that Hitt's heart is healthy and that his arteries are not clogged with life-threatening plaque. In fact, the doctor said the condition of Hitt's arteries had improved in recent years, since he started paying more attention to his health, including losing more than 100 pounds.

"He had a couple pesky areas that were giving him problems," Milunski said.
